The Laba Festival has a long and storied history, tracing back to ancient "La Sacrifices." In the old days, people would hold sacrificial ceremonies at the end of the year to express gratitude to their ancestors and gods for their blessings and to pray for a prosperous and auspicious coming year. Over time, these traditions evolved into what we now know as the Laba Festival.
On this special day, which falls on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, a delicious and symbolic dish takes center stage - Laba Porridge. It's a carefully crafted concoction of various ingredients, such as glutinous rice, red beans, peanuts, dried dates, and lotus seeds. The slow-cooking process melds these elements into a thick, fragrant, and sweet porridge. Each bite is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a symbol of unity, abundance, and good fortune for the family.
In northern regions, there's another interesting custom - making Laba Garlic. Garlic cloves are soaked in vinegar and sealed in jars. By the time of the Chinese New Year's Eve, the garlic turns a beautiful green color and is paired with dumplings, adding a unique and zesty flavor to the festivities.
